Returned Order of Canada the height of arrogance

When Reverend Lucien Larre returned his Order of Canada yesterday to protest Henry Morgentaler's receipt of the same, the only message he sent to Canadians was: "I am holier than thou."

The Order of Canada recognises people for "a lifetime of distinguished service in or to a particular community, group or field of activity". When someone acts so conceited as to return his Order of Canada because of who else has been appointed to it, he is announcing that he feels his contribution to this country is worth more than that of others, and that he will not share an award with someone to whom he is superior. It really boggles the mind.

There is no aspect of the award that Morgentaler, a Holocaust survivor who knows what murder really is, does not deserve. His tireless work on abortion rights can only be described as "a lifetime of distinguished service in ... a particular ... field of activity."

No doubt the people who label supporters of Morgentaler as "pro-murder" apply the same standards to all life. Or are they superior there, too?

Good job 'lu. I strongly agree.

First post!

I'd troll-rate that guy for putting "first post!" up :)

Anyhow.. I slightly disagree - I dont think it's arrogance.. I think its utter hypocrisy on this priest's part. He should have turned in the OC long ago after he was convicted of abuse charges. I'm also awaiting the Conservative petition asking Conrad Black's OC be returned as well.

Every single letter writer in today's Merc disagree with your perspective on this appointment.

Oh c'mon CC, you're using a few letters to claim Cdlu is wrong? The pro-life movement and the extreme right wing conservatives are if anything else highly organized and highly motivated in doing stuff like this - whether it's stacking an online poll, or writing letters to the editor.

We call that "freeping" CC.. and that's all your letter writers are.

David Graham (cdlu.net) writes at Fri Jul 4 11:37:46 EDT 2008...

CC,

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and 4 letters to the editor does not make a consensus. I find it sadly entertaining that at least one of the letters chastises Morgentaler for having a conviction while failing to point out that Larre has as well, not to mention OoC member Conrad Black who is currently behind bars...

The comment also in one letter to the editor that the Order of Canada should "reflect our heartfelt thanks and gratitude as a whole nation, not just a fraction of it" should cause some pause. I for one have nothing whatsoever to thank Brian Mulroney, a companion of the order, for, and his appointment in no way reflects my views.

Hey David:

I can't say I agree with the people who have returned their Order of Canada medals (one posthumously) but abortion is still a very hot topic in some circles. What I do admire is that these people believe so strongly in their convictions that they do as their conscience dictates, as unpopular as it may be.

Myself, I don't believe in abortion as a birth control method, but do believe that in circumstances such as rape and disease that it should be allowed. I also understand and respect that it isn't my decision to tell a woman she cannot undergo the surgery at her discretion and believe that the laws should allow for that. Call me strange, but I'm kind of a "your rights stop where mine start" person and I fail to see how my beliefs in this case would even apply to any woman's rights (unless it was my child in there - but that is a completely different discussion).

Well, I guess a big congratulations to Dr. Morgantaler are in order from me: Congratulations Dr. Morgentaler. We need people from all sides of the spectrum to fight for their beliefs so that we can all enjoy a free society where we are allowed to speak our minds. And lets face it, life would be pretty boring if everyone toed the same line. ;-)
